Welcome to Chevalier Roche Society
Chevalier Roche Society (CRS) is a development support organization, registered under the societies and trust registration Act, Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, and income tax act. It was founded by Mr.James Derose on 2nd march 1990 vide registration number 17/90 to commemorate the prominent Tamil leader chevalier J.L.P.Roche Victoria who had served as food minister of the government of Tamilnadu.
Chevalier Roche Society supports marginalized sections of society, particularly the fisher folk in their struggle for their basic rights and grass root community based organizations (CBOs/SHGs) in their development initiatives. CRS constantly strive to generate awareness on basis human rights and convince policy makers for formulating pro – poor policies. The thematic focus area of the Chevalier Roche Society is empowerment, with specific focus on Sustainable, Livelihood, Governance, Human Rights, Health, Conservation of Marine, Agriculture and Forest Wealth, Climate changes adaptation, Biodiversity conservation, Natural Resource Management, Disaster Mitigation and Community based Disaster Risk Management. The target group for Chevalier Roche Society is socially and economically disadvantaged people specifically Coastal community, Farmers, Tribal's and Differently abled persons, women, children and youth of coastal community people, farmers and handicaps.
Chevalier Roche Society works in 6 districts of southern Tamilnadu, namely Thoothukudi, Ramnad, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Chevalier Roche Society believes in the essential dignity of people and their capacity to overcome the problems and pressures which can crush or exploit them. These may be rooted in climate and geography, or in the more complex areas of economics, politics, and social conditions. We are a partnership of people who share this belief, people who regardless of faith, sex, social order, or politics work together for the basic human rights of food, shelter and reasonable conditions of life. We believe that if shared equitably, there are sufficient material resources in the world to find a measure of fulfillment and to meet their basic human needs. Chevalier Roche Society is managed by a group of highly talented individuals committed to bring about a change in the society in favour of the disadvantaged and oppressed. Mr. Gunabalan , Retd (District Labour Officer ) is the president, Dr.J. Tagore Derose is the Secretary. All these individuals have been in the field of development work for more than 20 years. These are 50 experiences and qualified staff members working in CRS 32 of whom are female members.
